Jazz Production at the Civic Theater

A message from Bob Dumon, Harbour Jazz founder:

“Some of you asked me at HT today for more information regarding the upcoming jazz production at the Civic Theater, advertised in the latest issue of The Beacon, called “Bring On The Jazz” so I thought I’d respond here with more details since I don’t have all of your email addresses.  The singers in this production, comprised of nine females and six males, are some of the best I’ve ever heard…really POWERFUL voices!  All but one are Afro-American, and it’s pretty easy to detect a “Gospel” foundation in their singing.  The “band” instrumentation is comprised of piano, upright bass, drums, “cigar box” guitars, congos and bongos, harmonica, tenor sax and me on trumpet (and I’m by far the least talented performer in this production!).  Following is a partial tune list of what’s in the show:

Bring on the Jazz Tune List

  1.             Bring on the Jazz
  2.             St. Louis Blues
  3.             Kitchen Man
  4.             When the Saints Go Marchin’ In
  5.             Where the Blues Were Born in New Orleans
  6.             Basin Street Blues
  7.             Swing Brother Swing
  8.             Sing, Sing, Sing – instrumental
  9.             Good Morning Heartache
  10.             God Bless the Child
  11.             All the Cats Join In
  12.             Killin’ Jive
  13.             Sophisticated Lady
  14.             Mood Indigo
  15.             Take the A Train
  16.             A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square
  17.             Minnie the Moocher
  18.             Sing, Sing, Sing – vocal rendition

The show is directed by Johnny Van Dyke and produced by Karen Pierson.  Performances are at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8th, and Saturday, February 9th, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, February 10th.  There are still a few tickets available at the Civic Center for Friday and Saturday evenings, and several still available for Sunday’s matinee. $14 in advance, $16 at the door if space is still available, and $10 for students and active duty military with ID.  All of the vocalists have performed in Civic Center productions in the past, e.g., Rent, Dreamgirls, etc.  These singers are truly fantastic, folks!  If you like jazz performed by some very talented singers, I think you’d really enjoy this production.”
