Joy is a member of the Graduate Realtors Institute and a Certified Residential Specialist. She has held many chairpersonships in the Neuse River Region Association of Realtors and has served as a Board Member. She received the Presidential Service Award in 2002.

In 2012 she served as the President of the Board of Realtors and was named the 2012 Realtor of the Year. Joy is a graduate of Alverno College, Milwaukee, WI and holds a Masters in Public Health from the University of Michigan. She and her husband, Jake, and puppy, Conner, live in Fairfield Harbour where they have built three homes. She is very active at St. Paul Catholic Church and in the New Bern Garden Club as a national flower show judge. She was also a Tour guide at Tryon Palace for twelve years.
