Neuse Realty Supports Salute to Women in the Military: Past and Present
For the second year in a row, Margaret Rose, President of Neuse Realty, served on the planning committee for this event. She commented: “This event is one of the most moving and inspirational events which we support.”
Sponsored by New Bern’s Promise Place and the New Bern Sun Journal, over 200 people attended the Salute to Women in the Military: Past and Present luncheon and the guest speaker for the event was Sergeant Major Holly Prafke.
The first “Salute to Women of the Military” was held at the Sheraton Hotel in New Bern on November 2nd, 1987. The idea for this tradition was the creation of Bee Mayo, a board member of the Craven County Council on Women, and Jean Nelson, Regional Director for the NC Council for Women who wanted to recognize women in nontraditional jobs.
“The “Salute to Women of the Military: Past and Present” is more than a luncheon. This event recognizes women as a vital part of our Nation’s armed forces. These women served in various capacities, beginning in America’s War of Independence. The “Salute” knows the role of women veterans is glorious and sadly not always acknowledged or appreciated. The debt owed to our women veterans and active/reserve military service women demands nothing less than our full attention and action. This is why it is so important the “Salute” continues to be supported by our local community and businesses.”
Proceeds, above cost, are donated to Promise Place, the only sexual assault resource center serving Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties. Promise Place is a 501(c) 3 located in New Bern which provides advocacy and trauma-focused therapy for child, adolescent, and adult survivors of sexual assault, along with outreach and education to our community around the issue of sexual violence.
